Maipo Andes Kuyen Syrah Cabernet Carmenere
Winery information: Alvaro Espinoza is a Chilean legend. He and his wife Marina run the first Boutique /Garage winery in Chile. They are the first to be certified Biodynamic and they have all sorts of wildlife in the vineyards including Llamas. They have just built a stunning new winery in the Maipo Alto. Antiyal Vineyards are located in the Maipo Valley, in three different locations, in Huelquen at the foothills of the Alto Maipo, another property in El Escorial and the third property in Isla de Maipo.
They grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere Syrah and Petit Verdot. The three vineyards are small, completing 8 has of vineyards in total, allowing a fine work in the vines.
Viticulture: Antiyal vineyards are part of small farms, that are worked under sustainable practices, with a fine care of the vines that you can only get in a garden size viticulture.
Vinification: The grapes were harvested in full ripeness, from the 25 th of April with Cabernet sauvignon, end of April and beginning of may with Sirah to the middle of May with the Carmenere. The grapes were hand harvested and selected before the crushing. The processes are in a small scale, processing 4 to 5 tons by day, with a minimal handling and a personal care in each of the stages. The grapes are fermented in small stainless steel vats (2 to 5 tons), the fermentation is done by wild native yeasts, and conduced at 26 to 28 ºC of temperatures, with softs pumping overs and a long maceration of an average of 25 days in total before pressing. The wine is racked to French barrels (new, one and two years old barrels) to make the malolactic fermentation and ageing. After one year in French barrels the wine is bottled, and aged 4 months in the cellar prior to release
Tasting Note: Kuyen 2009, has a deep colour with intense aromas of berries, red fruit, earthiness with spicy and minerals notes, with good expression and complexity. In the palate the wine has good volume, with balance and concentration, with ripe soft tannins in the finished.
