Chateau Tasting Notes
Le Montrachet Domaine Thenard
REMOISSENET PERE ET FILS, BURGUNDY
Thanks to the inheritance laws formulated by Napoleon, ownership of most of Burgundy's vineyards, including the renowned Cote d'Or, is split between many different growers.
Remoissenet Pere et Fils is a small family owned domaine, passed down from father to son, and consists of 6 acres of prime vineyards situated in Beaune Premier Cru. Remoissenet represents the traditional style of wine making in Burgundy and holds extensive stocks of older vintages, wines that have, largely disappeared from other merchants' lists.
Roland Remoissenet who today runs the domaine is also an imporant broker and negociant.
Note: Le Montrachet is the most famous Grand Cru white Burgundy, the apogee of the Chardonnay grape produced from a single vineyard in the Cote de Beaune district of the Cote d'Or. Le Montrachet covers just under 8 hectares stradling the borders of Puligny and Chassagne. Part of the greatness of this wine lies in the limestone soil, and the rest in its perfect south east exposition, which keeps the sun from dawn to dusk One of the principal owners and producers of Le Montrachet is Baron Thenard whose wine is made by Remoissenet.
Winemaking: Vinification in French oak barrels. The wine was then matured in Allier barriques for 12 months (1/3 new oak) followed by a further 6 months in bottle prior to release.
Serve: At 12 C with foie gras, and important fish and white meat dishes including lobster.
Taste: Considered to be the top Grand Cru of Burgundy, the wine itself is complex, elegant with a wonderful bouquet and considerable length.
