Kevin's comments: 60% Syrah together with Grenache and Mourvedre make this a warm full-flavoured wine; eminently drinkable in style.
CHATEAU DE CAMPUGET TRADITION RED
Costieres de Nimes, easternmost appellation of the Languedoc in Southern France was elevated from VDQS to AC status in 1986. It is effectively part of the Rhone since the climate, soil and topography are so similar to those just over the river in the southern Cotes-du-Rhone vineyards. The relatively uniform soils are marked by large pebbles on gentle, typically south-facing slopes. Co-operatives are less important here than in most of the Languedoc and most of the development and experimentation is taking place on the smaller estates.
Chateau de Campuget is a splendid, top quality estate near Nimes with a long history. The secret of its success is its reliance on the best grapes - Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Marsanne and Roussane, planted in the stony soil, like that of the Rhone, which reflects the sun and enlivens the vines. In its cellar, tradition and progress unite to provide aroma, finesse and bouquet. Chateau de Campuget deploys a wide range of traditional Rhone cepage to produce full, easy and spicy wines.
CHATEAU DE CAMPUGET TRADITION ROUGE
Grapes: 65% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 5% Mourvedre
Notes: A deep, brilliant colour with garnet tinges, it leaves traces of its power on the sides of the glass.
The nose is full, rich and complex with traces of raspberry and cassis allied to the scent of spicy liquorice and green peppers.
On the palate, the wine is generous and supple, and evokes the fruity notes from the nose. Round and velvety with generous berry fruit flavours and a bouquet that carries through to the end.
Serve: Perfect accompaniment to red meat dishes.
