52741 Tramin Pinot Grigio Alto Adige DOC 2008

£11.08

CANTINA TRAMIN (TERMENO)  ALTO ADIGE

Alto Adige is the northern, predominantly German speaking part of the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Italy that borders on to the Austrian Tyrol.  It was ceded to Italy only after the First World War.  This region is known as Südtirol by the German-speakers and owes its Italian name of Alto-Adige to the river Adige that flows through on its way to the Adriatic.  The sleepy village of Termeno/Tramin is thought to be the birthplace of the Traminer white grape variety, also known as Gewurztraminer.

Cantina Tramin (Termeno), founded in 1898, has 280 member winegrowers who follow its strict directives on the cultivation of the vines and covers 230 hectares of vineyards situated on the sunny slopes at an altitude of between 250-700M above sea level.  These vineyards are an integral part of the enchanting and picturesque landscape.

In 2004 Will Stűrz, the winemaker at Tramin, was nominated Italian winemaker of the Year by the prestigious Gambero Rosso and makes some of the best white wines in Italy.  Gewurztraminer Nussbaumer once again gained the coverted 3 Bicchieri award in the 2009 edition of the Gambero Rosso.  Tramin proudly holds the Stella, the star awarded to a winery for achieving the prestigious 3 Bicchieri 10 times.
