Chateau Tasting Notes
DOMAINE DU GRAND TINEL, CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
Chateauneuf-du-Pape takes its name from the relocation of the papal court to Avignon in the 14th century. It is much the biggest and most important specific Rhone appellation. Its vines grow in what looks like a shingle beach of big, smooth, oval stones that often cover the whole surface of the vineyard. These rounded stones reflect the heat of the sun during the day and remain warm at night. This allows the grapes to attain a high degree of maturity.
DOMAINE DU GRAND TINEL was founded in the 18th century and its name derives from the Latin word "Tina" meaning large barrel or cellar. In 1846 the Establet family acquired parcels of vines at La Gardiole which still today represents the heart of the property, with its windmill known as "Le Moulin de l'Auro". Grapes: 40% Grenache, 60% Cinsault, Counoise, Mourvedre and Syrah
Soil: Stony and sandy, pebbles, a result of the erosion of the lower Alps by the river Rhone.
Vinification: Traditional: The grapes are selected as they are picked. Long fermentation with the must remaining in contact with the skins for 15-18 days. Fermentation in temperature controlled vats. The wine is aged in large oak barrels for 1 year.
Colour: Rich ruby red
Serve: At room temperature with strong flavoured meat dishes, game and cheese.
Taste: A well balanced and structured wine with a complex and spicy bouquet.
