Rockburn Pinot Noir
Winery information: Rockburn started as the hobby of Richard Bunton in 1991. He planted a few hectares of vineyard in the then pretty much unknown area of Central Otago. In 2005, Malcolm Francis the winemaker, arrived from Felton Road where his skills immediately reaped the rewards when he won the Elite Gold Medal. This is a very exciting new arrival on the world Pinot Noir stage.
Vinification: Grapes are handpicked from Rockburn's two vineyards in Gibbston Valley and Parkburn. The juice undergoes cold maceration and fermentation followed by 10 months ageing in new and old French oak.
Tasting Note: Deeply fruited with delicate floral tones enhanced by nuances of liquorice root, and supple, silky tannins leading into a long spicy finish. As always this wine shows classic Rockburn elegance, integrity and balance
The 2008 was a great hit and undoubtabley a top NZ Pinot. Extraordinary creamy texture, vanilla, cherry and thyme flavours with coffee notes on the finish. Very silky tannins, mouth filling and great acidity. Cellaring potential.
The fruit was sourced from two vineyards in Central Otago, Gibbston (alluvial gravel soil) and Parkburn (loam over river gravel soil). Winemaking techniques involved cold maceration for up to 1 week followed by another week of regular plunging. The wine was aged in a combination of new and old French oak barrels. No fining agents were used.
