BERTON VINEYARD, AUSTRALIA BONSAI SHIRAZ
Berton Vineyard is located near the village of Eden Valley, in High Eden, a sub-region of the Eden Valley in South Australia. This is a region of rugged beauty straddling the ridge that is the divide between the Eden Valley and the Barossa. At this altitude, the cool climate provides ideal conditions for the production of high quality fruit.
Berton Vineyards was established by Cherie and Bob Berton in 1996. Since then the company has expanded to include Chief Winemaker, James Ceccato, Finance Director, Jamie Bennett, Sales Director, Paul Bartholomaeus and Business Manager, Rachael Wood. Bob Berton is Managing Director. All have long experience in the wine industry and who, together with Bob and Cherie, consitute a closely knit and determined team.
This year the company has expanded further through the acquisition of a modern 20,000 tonne winery in Yenda, NSW.
The name started as a joke, Bob and Cherie Berton had struggled to get their vineyard established on the thin bony soils of High Eden, so after 5 years of huge effort the vines still looked like rootings. To ease the pain they started calling if the 'Bonsai Vineyard' and the name stuck.
BONSAI SHIRAZ
Grapes: 100% Shiraz
Region: High Eden
Winemaking: The grapes were crushed and de-stemmed in a small hand crusher into a 2 tonne vat. Fermentation and hand plunging took place over the next 3 weeks before pressing in a traditional basket press. The pressings were put back into stainless steel tank and the wine settled on its lees for 3 weeks before being racked into 4 American oak barriques. The wine finished malolactic fermentation in October and was aged for another 12 months before being bottled.
Taste: This intense, rich and full flavoured Shiraz with well integrated oak, shows lovely black cherry, chocolate and white pepper on the palate. It is intense, rich and full flavoured with a long and defined finish with integrated tannins.
Cellaring: Will age well beyond 2014.
