Piesporter Treppchen Riesling Spatlese
Karl Jostock-Thul's wines are characterised by lightness and elegance.
Chateau Tasting Notes
WEINGUT KARL JOSTOCK THUL & SOHN Weingut Karl Jostock-Thul & Sohn has been family owned for generations and is still a family run business. The winery is run by Karl Jostock-Thul Senior and his son, Ralf. Ralf Jostock has been responsible for the vinification since 1992.
The surface area of vineyards owned currently covers 7 hectares, which are spread over Leiwen, Kowerich, Klusserath and Piesport. Here can be found the weathered slate soils on steep slopes as well as light, sandy flinty soils which give Mosel wines their characteristic lightness and elegance.
The preferred variety of the Weingut is the traditional Riesling which is cultivated on 80% of the surface area. The remainder is made up of Mueller Thurgau, Weisser Burgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Blauer Spaetburgunder.
The estate, and in particular the son Ralf, puts special emphasis on wines which are attractive with good structure. This is achieved through a careful working of the grapes in a pneumatic stainless steel press. Following this, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks which are constantly cooled by water, giving a longer and delicate fermentation. Finally, the young wine is left for a period of time in contact with the natural yeasts. The wines mature in old wooden casks as well as in stainless steel tanks.
Grape Varieties: Riesling
Notes: The vineyard of Treppchen is the largest around the village of Piesport on the left bank of the Mosel.
Serve: Chilled at 8o to 10oC with pork, poultry, cold meats and fish or ideal as an aperitif.
Tasting Notes: Plenty of fine Riesling flavours, with great depth from the Spatlese quality. An off dry but very well balanced wine.
