Kevin's comments: The area of Fourchaume is an extension of the northerly slopes of the Grands Crus. Fourchaume is distinguished by its power, elegance, bouquet and length.
Chateau Tasting Notes
DOMAINE JEAN GOULLEY ET FILS, CHABLIS, BURGUNDY
Chablis is separate and distinct from Burgundy, not only as a vineyard area, but also as a district. It is over a hundred kilometres from the most northerly part of the nearest, central-vineyards of Burgundy, while the vineyards of the Aube district, which produce champagne, lie only twenty-five kilometres away. Indeed, viticulturally speaking it is very closely related to champagne, and it is only because it formed part of the Duchy of Burgundy that it has always been considered a wine of that region.
Domaine Jean Goulley is a relatively new company that was formed in 1986 when Jean, already an owner of 6 hectares of vineyards, decided to quit his job in the motor trade in order to realise an old dream - to look after 'his own' vines and to make 'his own' wine. 10 years later, his son, Phillipe, joined the family company.
Of the 6 hectares, 4.5 are in the Premier Cru districts of Montmains, Mont de Milleu and Fourchaume, The parcels of Fourchaume have been left to him by his God Father. They are situated right in the centre of this appellation, in an area formerly known as 'La Nouvelette'. Today they constitute the heart and soul of the Domaine, which has grown to 18 hectares in 5 appellations, producing around 11,000 cases..
Grape Variety: Chardonnay from their 3 parcels totalling 1.5 hectares. One of the parcels has vines aged more than 60 years. The yield is an average of about 60 hectos per hectare.
Soil: Limestone
