Chateau Tasting Notes

CASTELLO VICCHIOMAGGIO, TOSCANA

The historical origins of Castello Vicchiomaggio can be traced back to the 5th century.  In 1964, the Matta family purchased the Castello, and set out to replant the Estate and create a cellar.

All winemaking techniques, from fermentation to ageing and bottling, is supervised by John Matta, who is a trained oenologist.  Responsibility for the vines and olive groves is in the hands of PierPaolo Brandani, whose father before him held the same position.  The philosophy at Vicchiomaggio is to produce wine in several styles, from the very traditional to the innovative.  Wines for different palates and occasions.   In order to achieve this, each part of the estate has been carefully classified according to its soil type and the exposure of its vineyards and each wine carries the name of the vineyard on its label.  The wines are of truly international quality and continue to win awards world-wide.

The castle also has holiday apartments and farmhouses, all with modern amenities that are open throughout the year and a restaurant where typical Tuscan specialities can be enjoyed.

Grape               90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo, 5% Colorino from the San Jacopo vineyard

Note:                The wine is matured in large oak barrels (25 to 75HL each). Made from a traditional grape mix, that produces a well-structured, fruit driven wine with a deep attractive colour.  The use of large oak barrels ensures a classic style.  The wine is always released 12-14 months after the harvest date when these characteristics can be enjoyed.  The name of the vineyard is taken from an historical house on the estate.

Serve:               At room temperature with meat pasta dishes, grilled and roast meats and cheese.

TASTING NOTES BY ROGER VOSS:

Vibrant red colour.  Ripe, fruity wine with balancing acidity.  Sweet black- cherry flavours, with a soft touch of tannins, giving a juicy, but dry wine. Lovely, easy wine, full of fruit, with just a hint of spice.
