Chateau Tasting Notes
FEUDI D'ALBE MONTEPULCAINO D'ABRUZZO, BOVE
The Apennines rise to their peak in the 9,000 foot Gran Sasso, which towers over L'Aquila (The Eagle), the capital of the Abruzzi. Mountains only fall away close to the sea, where Pescara is the principal town. Close as it is to Rome, the Abruzzi is a simple region of farmers and shepherds and has only 3 DOC appellation wines based on the Montepulciano and Trebbiano grapes.
The native red Montepulciano grape (not to be confused with the town of that name in Tuscany where Vino Nobile is made) is a vine of undeniable distinction, even if its inherent class is not as widely acclaimed as it deserves to be. In parts of the Abruzzi, mainly in the north, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo becomes a red wine of irresistible character full-bodied, even robust, with a capacity to age but with such supple smoothness that it can be eminently drinkable even when young. The Trebbiano is based on the prolific Tuscan variety, which makes light wines of subtle aroma and flavour.
In 1930 the Bove family purchased the estate and since then has enlarged and modernised the winery. Its wines are made mainly from estate grown grapes and are exported to many countries.
