ANTICA MASSERIA DEL SIGILLO, PUGLIA
Over the centuries the vine has influenced the history of Italian people, especially in Puglia where wine is still one of the main products of Salento.
Antica Masseria Del Sigillo is situated in Guagnano, an agricultural town, in the heart of the Salento Peninsula. The company was founded in 1998 by a group of growers' sons, who together with local investors, aimed to produce the best quality Salento wines with a modern appeal. Oronzo Ale the winemaker, a native from Puglia, is recognised to be one of the best in southern Italy. In its short history, Antica Masseria Del Sigillo, has received many commendations and awards for the quality of its wines.
Grapes: 60% Primitivo, 20% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon
Age of Vines: 10-25 years Production Area: The North Western part of the Salento region of Puglia
Production per Hectare: 9-12 tonnes Time of Harvest: 10th to the 30th September
Method of Harvest: Picked by hand into wooden cases of 12-15 Kilos
Vinification: Grapes were de-stalked and crushed. The fruit was then transferred to small horizontal rotary fermenters where fermentation took place at 22-25C, lasting for approx. 5 days. Final alcoholic and malolactic fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks.
Ageing: 10 months in French barriques followed by 6 months in bottle
Serve: At 20-22C to accompany roast meats, game and mature cheese. The wine is best decanted before pouring.
Taste: This elegant and well balanced wine is ruby red in colour. It has a vinous bouquet with a hint of brushwood and spices. A big wine with a rich and velvety taste capable of long ageing. Limited production of 6,700 bottles.
