Kevin's comments: An espresso of a wine! Strong, purple black and intense.
THE BLACK SHIRAZ
Berton Vineyard is located near the village of Eden Valley, in High Eden, a sub-region of the Eden Valley in South Australia. This is a region of rugged beauty straddling the ridge that is the divide between the Eden Valley and the Barossa. At this altitude, the cool climate provides ideal conditions for the production of high quality fruit.
Berton Vineyards was established by Cherie and Bob Berton in 1996. Since then the company has expanded to include Chief Winemaker, James Ceccato, Finance Director, Jamie Bennett, Sales Director, Paul Bartholomaeus and Business Manager, Rachael Wood. Bob Berton is Managing Director. All have long experience in the wine industry and who, together with Bob and Cherie, consitute a closely knit and determined team.
This year the company has expanded further through the acquisition of a modern 20,000 tonne winery in Yenda, NSW.
Australia has forged an enviable reputation for huge unrestrained flavours that are exemplified by this wine.
THE BLACK SHIRAZ
Grapes: 100% Shiraz
Region: South Australia
Taste: Intense colour, huge palate and high in alcohol, it displays vanilla, ripe plums and black cherries on the nose. The palate shows intense berry and rich fruit cake characters underpinned by layers of coffee and toasty oak that carry through to a lovely soft finish. A big wine at a mere 14.5% alcohol!
Serve: The perfect choice for rich, spicy -especially peppery- dishes. Steak au poivre, full flavoured game casseroles, beef sausages and Chilli con Carne are all great food matches. Ethnic dishes such as Shami kebab, Szechuan beef and Teriyaki dishes all work well. Also perfect with strong cheeses or simply enjoy anytime!
