WELTEVREDE WINE ESTATE, SOUTH AFRICA
Just outside Bonnievale, in the picturesque Robertson Valley, lies Weltevrede (meaning “well satisfied”), a wine estate, owned by the Jonker family, whose proud heritage stretches back over many years, and where, since 1912, the art of winemaking has been passed from generation to generation. Today, this legacy is reflected in a specialised range of wines enjoyed by connoisseurs at home and abroad.
Wine has been an integral part of the Jonker family tradition for four generations. It began when Klaas Jonker purchased the farm that was then just scrub land and planted the first vineyards in the area. He was followed by Japie Jonker, who in 1933, began wine farming on Weltevrede. Today the tradition is carried on by Lourens Jonker, aided by his son Philip. In 1969 Lourens purchased neighbouring farms which he consolidated into 150 hectare Estate.
In 1970 a comprehensive vineyard planting programme was instituted to provide for the production of classic noble varietals such as Rhine Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer and Chardonnay in addition to Colombard, Muscat and Chenin Blanc. In 1995 the first Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were planted on specially selected ‘terroirs’ on south facing slopes. Year after year, Weltevrede’s wines have been acclaimed for their quality and have won numerous trophies and Gold Medals.
WELTEVREDE TRICOLORE
Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Syrah
Notes: Inspired by winemaker Philip Jonker’s work experience in the cellars of France. Tricolore, named after the French flag with its three classic colours of red, white and blue, symbolises style, passion and a love of life.
Vinification: Each grape variety was fermented separately in temperature controlled tanks and then blended together. The wine was then matured in oak prior to being bottled. Serve: With red meat dishes and barbeques. Taste: A rich barrel matured wine with flavours of ripe black cherries, berries and plums.
