Penny's Hill The Veteran Very Old Fortified Shiraz
Established by Susie and Tony Parkinson in 1988, with the purchase of 32 hectares of grazing land on the foothills east of McLaren Vale, Penny's Hill Vineyard was named after the hill at the base of which it is located. The land was declared ideal for the cultivation of Shiraz and the first vines were planted in 1991. Whilst McLaren Vale is noted for consistent climatic conditions, the slightly higher elevation of Penny's Hill vineyard reduces temperature extremes in Summer making for a superior site-climate which in turn contributes to even ripening and higher fruit quality.
Vinification Aged for 20 years in barrel, this wine is ready to drink now and will cellar for many more years to come.
Viticulture From very long-lived Shiraz vines, fruit is left to ripen fully on the vine to maximise rich concentrated flavour. Fortified with a high quality brandy spirit, the distinctive nutty, character of this fine old Tawny is the result of more than 20 years of aging in oak barrels. During this extended maturation period the wine develops layers of depth and complexity and all the hallmark characteristics of a classic Australian Tawny.
