Dona Paula Estate Malbec from Mendoza

In 1990, the perfect locations and terrains were scouted in an attempt to find the soil and traits for Dona Paula wines. It wasn't until 1997 that the first vineyard was acquired in Ugarteche. The region was chosen because of its ability to produce aromatic Malbec grapes for their wine. 

As most wine lovers know, the soil makes a difference in the taste of the grapes. Dona Paula Estate Malbec comes from vineyards in Altamira and Gualtallary. Both vineyards are between 1,150 meters and 1,350 meters above sea level. The location has a cold climate with minerals that influence the flavor of the wines. The vineyard uses drip irrigation and harvest is the first week of April. 

Dona Paula believes that they are successful, and one of the favorites of wine lovers because they respect the details of producing the finest wines. They consider themselves passionate and artistic about the Malbecs as well as the other wines they produce. They are also innovative and are striving for superior wines each time they harvest. 

Processing and Fermentation
The grapes are destemmed very gently so nothing is broken during the harvesting process. After harvest, a cold pre-fermentation process begins. This is a style that Dona Paula is famous for implementing. The fermentation happens at low temperatures to preserve the aroma. The three-step process of fermentation happens before the wine is aged in oak barriques. The wine is allowed to age for 10 months. 

Tasting Note
The care and processing of the grapes grown in the rocky, cold climate produces the darker flavors of blackberry and plum. The color is extremely dark like the flavor, and there's a balance of spices and minerals in the mouth upon tasting. The high elevation of the vineyards contributes to the acidity and taste of the grapes. 

Food Pairings
The persistent finish and soft tannins of the Dona Paula Estate Malbec should be paired with a lean cut of meat. The strong quality of the aroma and taste can be paired with many ethnic favorites with a mixture of sausage and lamb, but the Malbec works especially well with mushrooms. 

Awards and Mentions
Tim Atkin, a British Master of Wine and noted, award-winning wine journalist, scored the Dona Paula Malbec 2012 at 92 points out of 100. The Dona Paula Malbec 2012 earned a silver in the Decanter World Wine Awards as well as a silver in the International Wine Challenge.
