Andeluna Pasionado Malbec 2013

The Andeluna Pasionado Malbec is a delicious red wine that is easy to drink. Made from 100% Malbec grapes, the Pasionado Malbec from Andeluna Wines can be enjoyed alone or with a meal, making it a red wine of choice for entertaining. The Andeluna Pasionado has won multiple awards over the years, including placing twice in gold and silver in the Argentina Wine Awards, receiving 92 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine for the 2005 vintage, a 92-point rating from Tim Atkin for the 2012 vintage, and a 93-point rating from Descorchados for the 2008 vintage.

Winery Information

The name "Andeluna" evokes the gorgeous scenery of the Andes Mountains under the light of a full Argentinian moon. Andeluna Wines is a boutique winery with estate-owned vineyards founded in 2003 by the partnership of an American businessman and a passionate Argentinian vintner. Michel Rolland, a French specialist and wine guru, works with winemaker Silvio Alberto to create boutique wines from their low-yield vines. The winery and vineyards cover almost 200 acres and are located 1,300 meters above sea level in the Uco Valley of the Mendoza region. Their 4,500 square meter wine cellar and in-house laboratory allow them to produce wines to a high standard. The winery now combines top-of-the-line winemaking processes with the culture and terroir of Mendoza to produce award-winning red wines.

Vinification

The hand-picked grapes go through a second careful selection process once they arrive within the winery. The selected whole grape bunches with their stems then undergo pre-fermentation maceration with dry ice, a process called carbonic maceration. The carbon monoxide released by the dry ice draws out enzymes in the grapes to break down sugars into alcohol. These enzymes begin the fermentation process rather than yeast or other micro-organisms to create a unique flavour. The resulting product is racked to drain off sediment, then undergoes a second round of maceration for ten days. The Andeluna Pasionado Malbec wine is then aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months, then bottled for at least 12 months before being released.

Viticulture

Malbec originated in France, but responded so poorly to the cool climate that it was rarely cultivated in great numbers. In the nineteenth century, however, the Malbec vine was brought to Mendoza, Argentina, where it truly began to thrive, eventually becoming the ubiquitous red wine known worldwide today. Rocky and calcareous soils combined with a dry climate of hot, bright days and cold nights, result in concentrated flavours in the grapes with low production per acre. Drip canopy irrigation provides each vine with the water they need to thrive in the dry high altitudes, then are hand-picked throughout the harvesting time when they reach peak condition.

Tasting Notes

The rounded sweet tannins and full-bodied nature of this Pasionado Malbec wine, combined with aromas of ripe red fruits and floral notes of violet, are part of what makes this Argentine Malbec so delicious. The oak casks the wine is aged in impart notes of vanilla, tobacco, and white chocolate. These aromas linger for a lasting finish.

Serving suggestion

The Andeluna Pasionado can be stored for a time, and then decanted at 16 degrees Celsius. It has a slightly higher-than-average alcohol content at 14.5%, so it can result in a heady sensation if a few glasses are enjoyed alone. The low tannin content allows it to pair well with lean meats such as fillet mignon or cuts of pork, but you may also enjoy this Argentine Malbec wine with roast duck and other fowl with gamy flavours. Avoid heavy cream sauces when pairing a Malbec wine with pasta, and instead choose a pesto or light tomato cream sauce to compliment this wine.

For a vegetarian dish, Malbec wine compliments Cajun flavours, barbecue, black pepper, and asiago and other hard cheeses. Incorporating these flavours with baked potatoes, roast cauliflower, and grilled tofu creates a pleasing complement to the wine. For an authentic Argentinian touch, try incorporating Argentinian condiments like chimichurri.
