Bloemendal Wine Estate Semillon 2013

The Bloemendal Estate Semillon is a spectacular example of white wine from a world class winery. This remarkable white wine shows how South Africa is leading the way in terms of top quality wines. The wine is complex and full in flavour with a delightful waxy consistency. It shows hints of oak and oodles of lime and apple characters. It's richness means that it needs to be paired with rich seafood dishes as it can dominate if the dish is too light.

Stunning, world-class Sauvignon Blanc has put the Bloemendal Wine Estate firmly on the map as a sought after producer among world wines. Situated in the heart of picturesque Durbanville just 30 minutes north of Cape Town, the 239 hectare Estate includes Kanonberg Mountain. This hilltop has amazing views of Table Mountain, False Bay, Stellenbosch, Swart land and beyond. It is here on the Southern Slope or "Suider-Terras "where the vineyards are planted with French cultivars, predominantly Sauvignon Blanc. The eponymous wine "Suider Terras" has been hailed as arguably the best Sauvignon Blanc in South Africa, having gained world wide prominence for its superior quality since the first bottling in 1987. We are delighted to offer this new precise range of wines from this top notch boutique winery.

Vintage

2013 was one of the biggest crops ever produced, with intense colours, exceptional flavours and good structure, especially in the reds.

Vineyard

The deep red soils are predominantly heavy Hutton clay, with the remainder comprising Tukulu, Oakleaf and Westleigh soil types. They are deep, cool and well drained, but with good water retention, allowing minimal irrigation, so nature can take its course and let the terroir shine through.

Winemaking

With some of the best terroir for this cultivar in the Cape, this wine is somewhat a passion for Francois Haasbroek and he produces only tiny quantities. The wine is made in a very traditional manner, with 66% fermented in 1st fill French oak 500 litre barrels and the remainder in stainless steel using natural yeasts. After blending the wine is aged in 500 litre barrels for seven months before a light fining and filtration.

Tasting Note

A really lovely expressive, waxy Semillon, with hints of greenery, chalk, lime cordial and touches of oak following through to intensely structured and complex palate, ample weight and a lingering finish. One of the New World's finest examples.

Serving Suggestion

Compliments grilled fish perfectly, but has enough complexity to make it a superb pairing with rich seafood.
