Bloemendal Estate Syrah 2012.

The Bloemendal Estate Syrah is the ultimate expression of South African terroir. This remarkable red wine shows typical Syrah characteristics and adds layers of complex flavours such as black olive and smoky textures. This is a serious red wine and should be enjoyed with rich dishes like venison and stews.

Stunning, world-class Sauvignon Blanc has put the Bloemendal Wine Estate firmly on the map as a soughtafter producer among world wines. Situated in the heart of picturesque Durbanville just 30 minutes north of Cape Town, the 239 hectare Estate includes Kanonberg Mountain. This hilltop has amazing views of Table Mountain, False Bay, Stellenbosch, Swartland and beyond. It is  here on the Southern Slope or "Suider-Terras" where the vineyards are  planted with French cultivars, predominantly Sauvignon Blanc. The eponymous wine "Suider Terras" has been hailed as arguably the best Sauvignon Blanc in South Africa, having gained worldwide prominence for its superior quality since the first bottling in 1987. We are delighted to offer this new precise range of wines from this top notch boutique winery.

Winery Information

Swartland Winery was established in 1948 near Cape Town, South Africa as a cooperative cellar. It now operates as a full-fledged wine company with its own production and bottling facilities. Wheat and grapes grow by the hectare throughout the region, with Swartland Winery producing from 3,600 hectares of vines from a 22km radius of surrounding farmland. The winery produces about 2 million 9 litre cases of wine a year, and its wines have been winning many awards in the past few years as their international acclaim rises. This region, with its hot, dry weather and bright blue skies, has proven to be an amazing place for growing bush wines. Since the 1990s, more red grape varieties have been planted than ever before, so South African red wine has become a more popular option on the market. Swartland red wine is exemplified in their Winemakers Collection, though they also produce a range of white, sparkling, and fortified wines.

Vineyard

The deep red soils are predominantly heavy Hutton clay, with the remainder comprising Tukulu, Oakleaf and Westleigh soil types. They are deep, cool and well drained, but with good water retention, allowing minimal irrigation, so nature can take its course and let the terroir shine through.

Winemaking

Cool climate Syrah is a passion for Francois Haasbroek, the winemaker. Fermented in four tonne open top concrete tanks with manual punch downs for extraction. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels, the wine is then aged in a combination of 500 and 300 litre French oak barrels over a 16 month period.

Tasting Note

A wonderfully expressive Syrah with smoky black olive fruit, concentrated and densely flavoured

Serving Suggestion

Enjoy with lamb, venison, steak, game or a rich lentil stew.
