Bloemendal Suider Terras 2014.

Stunning, world-class Sauvignon Blanc has put the Bloemendal Wine Estate firmly on the map as a soughtafter producer among world wines. Situated in the heart of picturesque urbanville just 30 minutes north of Cape Town, the 239 hectare Estate includes Kanonberg Mountain. This hilltop has amazing views of Table Mountain, False Bay, Stellenbosch, Swartland and beyond. It is here on the Southern Slope or "Suider-Terras" where the vineyards are planted with French cultivars, predominantly Sauvignon Blanc. The eponymous wine "Suider Terras" has been hailed as arguably the best Sauvignon Blanc in South Africa, having gained worldwide prominence for its superior quality since the first bottling in 1987. We are delighted to offer this new precise range of wines from this top notch boutique winery.

Vintage

The 2014 vintage was challenging, it was a very wet winter in 2013 which followed through into the early growing season, so yields and canopy sizes were up. The growing season was predominantly cool and coupled with the higher crop yield, the harvest started a couple of weeks later than usual, but with amazing acidity levels. A heat-wave hit the region just as harvesting started, so the producers worked flat out to get everything in on time. The incredible acidities of the grapes picked early, compared to those picked later with slightly lower levels, meant it was a year for blending to achieve the perfect balance.

Vineyard

The deep red soils are predominantly heavy Hutton clay, with the remainder comprising Tukulu, Oakleaf and Westleigh soil types. They are deep, cool and well drained, but with good water retention, allowing minimal irrigation, so nature can take its course and let the terroir shine through.

Winemaking

Three successive pickings from the fabled Suider Terras block stretching over a two week period, allowed for lots with both punchy aromatics and luscious texture. Fermented took place in a combination of 500 litre French oak and concrete tanks; the lots were blended in April and aged in barrel for ten months.

Tasting Note

A vibrant golden hue with green core, the wine explodes with the characteristics of a Suider Terras Sauvignon Blanc, from fynbos, chalk, limes to herbs. A robust wine built for serious ageing and development. Structure was given preference over perfume for this wine. Made for pairing with good food and will age between 7-10 yrs.

Serving Suggestion

Delicious served chilled, also perfectly matched with seafood, oysters and fish dishes with delicate sauces.
