Chateau Leoville Barton Reserve De Leoville Barton 2013/14

There are now 47 ha of vineyards at Chateau Leoville-Barton, owned by the Anglo-Irish Barton family since 1821. The vineyards lie close to the Gironde, sandwiched between the water and Chateau Talbot. They have a typical St Julien terroir of gravelly soils over deeper clay. The vines are 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, the remainder being 20% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, reflecting the classic, Cabernet-dominated wine produced here by estate manager Michel Raoult together with Anthony Barton and his daughter, Lilian. Made from the younger vines, the Reserve has always represented wonderful value.

Vinification
Generally fermentation lasts about five days during which the juice is pumped over twice daily. The wine is left with the skins for two weeks approximately but this depends on the quality of the crop. The wine is then drawn off and the skins are pressed, thereby obtaining the vin de presse which is an important component in the final blend. The malo-lactic fermentation takes place in the vats, after which the wine is aged in oak barrels for 20 months before bottling.

Viticulture
The vineyard is trained in organic and biodynamic vine growing.

Tasting Note
Smooth with coffee and cedar notes - a classically styled Bordeaux from this esteemed estate in St Julien.

Country / Region / Appellation
FR / Bordeaux / Saint Julien AOC
