Eden Road Wine Company Courabyra Chardonnay 2015

The Eden Road Courabyra Chardonnay is an unoaked Chardonnay which displays the delightful fruit characters that this wonderful grape variety can give.

Located in Murrumbateman in New South Wales' Canberra Wine District, boutique winery Eden Road was established in 2008 by businessman Chris Coffman and was awarded the most prestigious wine award in Australia - The Jimmy Watson - for its first vintage of The Long Road Shiraz in 2009. Its collection of cool climate wines in a raft of exciting and original styles are highly-prized, and owe much to the soils the vines are planted on which were formed over 400 million years ago and are some of the oldest on the planet.

Vintage

2012 was incredible for Tumbarumba Chardonnay. It was challenging, with lots of rainfall, however it fell in big storms rather than constantly. There were plenty of sunshine hours in between the rain and there was enough sunshine to really ripen the fruit. 2012 is shaping up to be a benchmark vintage for Tumbarumba with fantastic acidity.

Vineyard

The vineyard sites throughout Tumbarrumba rise from 400 to 800 metres above sea level to the foothills of the Snowy Mountain. Courabyra is situated just northwest of the village of Tumbarrumba at 740m above sea level and is one of the highest altitude vineyards in the country. The vineyard is a six hectare vineyard, two hectares of Chardonnay. The clone used is one of the Penfolds clones, grown on decomposed granite with iron stone deposits soils at an average yield of four tonnes per hectare. The fruit is all hand-picked.

 Winemaking

An unoaked style. The winemaking was kept simple in order to express the terroir. The fruit was whole bunchpressed and transferred to stainless steel for fermentation with indigenous yeast. The wine was then matured on its gross lees in tank for 15 months and stirred on a weekly basis. No additives were used except a small amount of sulphur prior to bottling. The wine went through 100% malolactic fermentation.

Tasting Note

Unoaked and bursting with vivacious notes of lemon peel, this is restrained and elegant Chardonnay with great length and a long life ahead
