Eden Road Wine Company; The Long Road Syrah 2013.

Eden Road The Long Road Syrah is a medium bodied red wine which displays surprising freshness and is actually lighter than most Aussie Shiraz can be. Theis red wine shows a fine balance between fruit and alcohol and that makes it a delight to drink on it's own or to pair with a variety of dishes like rabbit or risotto.

Located in Murrumbateman in New South Wales' Canberra Wine District, boutique winery Eden Road was established in 2008 by businessman Chris Coffman and was awarded the most prestigious wine award in Australia - The Jimmy Watson - for its first vintage of The Long Road Shiraz in 2009. Its collection of cool climate wines in a raft of exciting and original styles are highly-prized, and owe much to the soils the vines are planted on which were formed over 400 million years ago and are some of the oldest on the planet.

Vineyard

90% of the grapes were sourced from Gundagai, which sits at an altitude of 300 metres above sea level and the soil type is a red iron stone rich podsol -similar to Coonawarra's Terra Rossa. The vines here are 20 years old. The remainder of the fruit was grown in the Canberra and Hilltops vineyards. Canberra sits on decomposed granite at 640 metres above sea level and the vines are 18 years old, whereas in the Hilltops vineyard, the soil is red clay and decomposed granite with 20 year old vines and is situated at an altitude of 600 metres.

Winemaking

The sub-regional parcels were all fermented separately, mostly destemmed, though a small proportion each year from each region is whole bunch fermented- resulting in 15% of final blend. The ferments were pressed when dry, into tank for settling. The Syrah was matured in three to twenty year old 500 litre puncheons for 14 months, no new oak. The puncheons were racked, blended and filtered into bottle. The Long Road Syrah is a barrel selection of declassified sub regional wines.

Tasting Note

Very fine tannins and controlled alcohol add to this wine's charm. Packed with classic nuances of berry fruit and a warm earthiness, this wine finishes fresh and lighter than you expect.
