Eden Road Wine Company, Tumbarumba Chardonnay 2013

The Eden Road Tumbarumba Chardonnay is a blend of the best barrels from two different vineyards, the Courabyra and Marangle. This is a delightful white wine with rich toasy flavours and a lovely acidity.

Located in Murrumbateman in New South Wales' Canberra Wine District, boutique winery Eden Road was established in 2008 by businessman Chris Coffman and was awarded the most prestigious wine award in Australia - The Jimmy Watson - for its first vintage of The Long Road Shiraz in 2009. Its collection of cool climate wines in a raft of exciting and original styles are highly-prized, and owe much to the soils the vines are planted on which were formed over 400 million years ago and are some of the oldest on the planet.

Vineyard

The fruit is sourced from two vineyards: a 30 year old vineyard in Maragle, which is situated at 450 metres above sea level and a 28 year old vineyard Courabyra, located at an altitude of 750 metres. At 20 kilometres away from Maragle, it ripens a month later than the Maragle site. The final blend represents a classic expression of Tumbarumba Chardonnay. Both vineyards are cropped at eight tonnes per hectare, with canopy management and balanced yields. The rootstocks are grafted on two clones: a Penfolds clone and V3/V11.

Winemaking

The Tumbarumba Chardonnay is a selection of the best barrels from both Courabyra and Maragle vineyards. The winemaking is kept simple in order to express the high country and rocky soil origins of the fruit. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and transferred to French oak barriques for fermentation with indigenous yeast. The wine was then matured on its gross lees in oak for 12 months and stirred weekly. No additives were used except in a small amount of sulphur dioxide prior to bottling.

Tasting Note

The high altitude of these vines lends a unique acidity to this wine, it has rich toasted notes that are encapsulated by a beautiful core of ripe orchard fruits.
