Foundstone Chardonnay Viognier 2015 from Berton Vineyards

Established by Bob and Cherie Berton in May 1996 with 75 acres of land at 450m above sea level on gently rolling hills in a sub-region of Eden Valley in South Australia, Berton Vineyards has been one of Hallgarten Druitt's most important partners. The superb Reserve Shiraz and Reserve Chardonnay wines are still sourced from this plot. In 2007 Bob purchased the Yenda winery in the heart of the Riverina. This state of the art facility has the capacity to process 10,000 tonnes, and allows Berton Vineyards to produce value for money wines which sit alongside his premium single vineyard offerings.

Vinification
The grapes were cool night harvested, and then transported across the hay plains to our Yenda winery. The grapes were de-stemmed and crushed, pressed and cold settled, before being racked off lees and inoculated with specially selected yeast strains. The ferments were carried out seperately in stainless steel tanks at a constant cool temperature of 13 degrees. After ferment the wins were then immediately racked off yeast lees and filtered, stored in stainless steel tanks ready for blending. The Chardonnay has had a little oak treatment.

Viticulture
All vines have been spur pruned. Vine age is varied. Vines are planted roughly 1.8m apart with 3.6m between the rows to allow machinery access. The trellis system is generally a single wire cordon.

Tasting Note
The Foundstone Chardonnay Viognier is a blend of two well suited varieties. The Chardonnay offers aromas of ripe stone fruit, peach and nectarine while the Viognier contributes a touch of apricot, orange blossom and rose petal that gives an extra dimension to this blend. The palate is full bodied with rich, ripe fruit and spicy vanillan oak with just enough acidity to give the wine a long satisfying finish.

Everyday Serving Suggestion
Enjoy with filo pastry chicken pie or just as an aperitif.
