Fox Gordon Eight Uncles Shiraz 2015

The Eight Uncles Shiraz is an elegent and restrained Shiraz, This is unusual for the Barossa which is a region renouned for it's bold and brash red wines. This Shiraz is velvety soft and full of delightful primary fruits with a hint of spice and pepper.

“There are no surprises with our wines. You know exactly what you’re getting - top quality Barossa and Adelaide Hills reds and whites,” says Fox Gordon’s winemaker Tash Mooney. And she’s spot on. These are contemporary and premium wines which are all made using the Fox Gordon philosophy of low input and low yield to give maximum flavour and preserve the inherent qualities of fruit and site. “If the fruit speaks for itself, the winemaker’s job is much simpler,” says Tash.

Vintage

2013 had a good growing season, with a wet winter and a wet spring so there was a lot of moisture in the soil when the heat hit in early February. Picked early in February, the Shiraz had lots of bright red fruit flavours.

Vineyard

The majority of the fruit is grown in the subregions of Greenock and Bethany in the Barossa, with vines of up to 20 years old. The addition of some fruit from a young vineyard grown in the Eden Valley, adds vibrancy.

Winemaking

The vineyards are vinified separately and the yeast used depends on the fruit characters. Two main cultured yeasts are used, one for warmer ferments and one for cooler ferments depending on what best suits the vineyard. The wine was fermented for over ten days in stainless steel and was then pressed to 225 litre oak barrels for 16 months in total. Gently filtered prior to bottling.

Tasting Note

Winemaker Tash Mooney is known for her elegance and restraint in her red wines despite their location in the Barossa Valley. Eight Uncles is all about primary fruits - plums, damson and cherries with a hint of mocha and peppery spice. The smooth velevety tannins add to its appeal with an unusually vibrant finish.
