Gerard Bertrand la Viala AOP Minervois la Laviniere 2013

Winery Information:
One of the most dynamic and brilliant winemakers from the South of France, where he owns no less than seven estates among the most prestigious terroirs of Languedoc Roussillon, Gérard Bertrand was named in 2012 as the ""European Winery of the Year"" by Wine Enthusiast and ""Red Wine Maker of the Year"" by the IWC.

Viticulture:
Gerard Bertrand acquired this uncommon plot of land in 1997 and encouraged the development of strong and powerful wines. This wine benefits from the semi-arid Mediterranean climate; the Viala is exposed to the conditions of the mid-south in the heights of the village la Livinière at around 120m of altitude. Average yield: 25 h/ha

Soil:
The ground is made up of a mosaic of stripped marlstone, associated to chalky limestone, as compact limestone dates back to the Eocene period millions of years ago

Vinification:
The harvest of the grapes is not started until the grapes have reached a certain level of maturity (sweet, acid, but also polyphenols) which allows the wine and land to express their enormous quality potentials. The grapes are manually harvested and the grapes are transported to the cellar for the vinification. The Carignan and the Syrah undergo carbonic maceration. The grapes are very ripe and the diffusion of the polyphenols is done quickly. After the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the different grapes are assembled and the wine is aged in new barrels of 225 litres for a minimum time period of 12 months.

Tasting Note:
Powerful nose of blackberries and violets. On the palate, smooth tannins and subtle woody notes, beautifully balanced and an never ending finish. An extreme delicacy and a huge lasting potential, one to keep in the cellar for up to 15 years.

Every day serving suggestion:
Enjoy at 16C with red meats, game or mature cheese.
