Joshua Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2015 from Teusner Wines
The Joshua Grenache Mataro Shiraz is a delightful unoaked blend of red grapes from the Barossa in Australia. The tannins are smooth as silk and hardly noticable yet the wine isn't light in flavours.
Set up by Kym Teusner and Michael Page in 2001, Teusner’s philosophy is to produce only exceptional, affordable wines by being very selective about the fruit that is sourced from old, well maintained vineyards. These vineyards reliably produce balanced, complex fruit which are guided, with minimal inputs, into wine. “Teusner was started by doing what we love, we never mapped it out to be so big. We started small and rode the wave and this is where we’ve ended. These are wines that we love to drink” explains Winemaker Kym Teusner.
A key difference here is the age of the vines, which are between 65 to 130 years old and are mostly in bush vine format. Sourced from several sub regions, Ebeneezer has the oldest vines - the exact age of the vines is not 100% certain, suffice to say that three generations have seen them grow!
No oak was used in the vinification of this blend in an effort to retain freshness and vibrancy. Grenache and Mataro have the ability to taste beautiful in youth and as they age they become more interesting, with savoury and earthy profiles. The Joshua wine was blended straight after the vintage in tank, with a natural malolactic fermentation and was then sulphured and settled. As soon as it was clarified, it was bottled, retaining freshness.
Unusually for the Barossa this blend is unoaked. Overflowing with juicy notes of cranberry, redcurrants, soft red liquorice and hints of rose, the gentle, barely-present tannins hold it all together seamlessly.
The Joshua Grenache Mataroa Shiraz is delicious when served slightly chilled with rich Indian curries or gourmet burgers and hot dogs
