Lockwood Vineyards Monterey Chardonnay 2014

Winery Information:
First released in 1989, Lockwood Vineyard was developed under the belief that world class estate produced wines are attainable through ideal vineyard location and quality winemaking. Lockwood Vineyard’s founders, Paul Toeppen, Phil Johnson and Butch Lindley, who have cumulative vineyard management experience of over 90 years, first planted the large 1,850 acre San Lucas Vineyard in 1981 after concluding that the parcel was perfect for growing premium grapes. The vineyard is in a remote area nestled at the base of the Santa Lucia mountain range, in Monterey County, and is one of the largest premium estate vineyards in the world. Under the new ownership of Boisset Famiy Estates, Lockwood Vineyard continues to be devoted to producing high quality estate grown wines.

Viticulture:
Early in the morning the entire region is cool and largely covered by a thick marine layer. As the sun rises, the valley warms and the heat burns off the dense fog. Cool air off the pacific Ocean is drawn in and funneled through the Gabilanand Santa Lucia mountain ranges, moving down the valley with increasing force as the day progresses. The ocean air acts as natural air conditioning system that mitigates the rise in temperature and extends the growing season, allowing for slow, gentle ripening. The unique topography of Monterey is protected from huge heat spikes that can cause damage in the vineyards, making it the ideal place to grow many different grape varieties.

Soil:
Crushed fossilized seashells similar to chalk and limestone

Tasting Note:
Pale lemon yellow in colour, the 2011 Lockwood Vineyard Chardonnay has bright citrus and green apple aromas and flavours, along with a touch of crisp spice. The bright fruit with its clean acidity and minerality, leads to a refreshing, long finish. The perfect accompaniament to many seafood and chicken dishes.

Every day serving suggestion:
Chilled to 8-9C. Will pair well with pasta dishes made with cream or cheese, with lobster or other rich seafood and with Asian dishes that include coconut milk.
