Maggio Chardonnay 2016

The Maggio Family have been growing superb grapes in Lodi for five generations and providing this fruit to many of the premium wine growers of California. It was only as recently as 2002 that they decided to turn their hand to making the final wine with the knowledge gained from making such superb grapes. They have very exacting standards when it comes to winemaking and vineyard management and this is seen in the superb quality of their wines.

Vineyard

The grapes are grown in 500 acres of estate vineyards throughout the Lodi American Viticultural Area, which are situated between the Sierra Nevada foothills and the San Francisco Bay. The Chardonnay grapes are grown in the Delta region, west of Lodi, which has a slightly cooler climate than central Lodi, both day and night. This gentle Mediterranean climate of warm days and coastal evening breezes, is ideal for the cultivation of world class grapes. The mature vines are gnarled and sculpted by time, yielding small amounts of intensely flavoured fruit to create wines that are the ultimate expression of their terroir.

Winemaking

The Chardonnay grapes were harvested at 23 to 24° Brix, at optimal ripeness, acidity levels and quality. The grapes were cool fermented at temperatures of between 11 to 13°C, to retain the fresh and fruity characters. The temperature was then increased to between 14 and 15.5°C, to ensure the ferment reached dryness. 75% of the wine was fermented in stainless steel, contributing the fresh fruit characters in the final blend, while 25% was fermented in 70% American oak staves and 30% French oak staves. The wine was aged in both American and French oak staves for four months, with 5% aged for four months in American and French oak barrels. The oak influences impart a soft complexity and mellow creaminess to the final wine.

Tasting Note

Maggio Chardonnay is a delicious white wine with exceptional fruit flavours that combine to produce a voluptuous wine with superb tropical fruit characteristics. This is a beautifully balanced white wine with citrus and butterscotch flavours and a delightfully smooth finish.

Serving Suggestion

Ideal with green salads with toasted pine nuts, lightly spiced and peppered roast chicken, cod or shellfish with delicate sauces.
