Mencia Vel'Uveyra Ronsel do Dil 2016

The Vel'Uveyra from Ronsel do Sil is an expressive wine with lively notes of vibrant red plum and a hint of rhubarb on the palate. Beautifully fresh and vibrant.

Producer Note - Ronsel dol Sil is a family-run winery located in the DO Ribeiro Sacra, near Parada de Sil in the north west of Spain. Two hectares of vineyard are manually cultivated on the steep hills of Ribeiro Sacra, where the vines are grown on the steep terraces known as ‘bancalas’ which were originally built by the Romans. Indigenous red varieties such as Mencía and Merenzao are grown alongside the native white varieties of Godello, Treixadura and Dona Branca on the banks of the River Sil. Ronsel do Sil has taken its name from the Spanish word ‘ronsel’ which means wake: the path a boat leaves when it sails through the water. The ideology behind Ronsel do Sil, is that it leaves its mark of passion and respect for sustainable viticulture and wine production in Ribeira Sacra.

Winemaker - Maria Jose Yravedra crafts these indigenous varietals into beautifully refined and mineral-driven wines. Vintage Heavy rain fell during the winter, which created good levels of water reserves in the soil. This was essential in the 2016 vintage, which was characterised by drought conditions during the summer months. The high hydric levels in the vines sustained them throughout the growing period and resulted in berries with concentrated fruits, producing wines with excellent varietal characteristics.

Vineyard - The vines are grown in the Parada de Sil and A Teixeira vineyards which are located in the subregion of Ribeiras do Sil. The climate is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and annual rainfall is 700 millimetres. The vineyards sit at 300 to 450 metres above sea level and are managed according to biodynamic principles with minimal intervention and without the use of pesticides. The vines range from 10 to 60 years and are grown in granitic soils. 35% of the vines are trained according to the goblet method and 65% are espalier trained. The harvest takes place manually when the grapes have reached optimal maturity levels towards the end of September.

Winemaking - Vinification took place with minimum intervention in a gravity fed winery. Fermentation took place with natural yeasts in 5,000 litre oak barrels.

Tasting Note - An expressive wine with lively notes of vibrant red berried fruits on the palate. Beautifully balanced with a long finish.

Serving Suggestion - Delicious with steak au poivre, grilled red meats or Manchego.
