Mulderbosch Chardonnay Stellenbosch 2019

The Mulderbosch Chardonnay has aromas of vanilla pod and caramel which are lifted by ripe notes of stone fruits balanced by a refreshing, zesty finish.

Producer Note - Founded in 1989, multi-award winning Mulderbosch Vineyards is one of South Africa’s foremost wine producers. As advocates to the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) code, they manage their vineyards limiting the use of herbicides, fungicides and pesticides. They use a restrained approach in the cellar to produce distinctive and characterful wines that represent the Stellenbosch terroir. Chenin Blanc is the Cape’s signature variety and they have the largest planting of this variety in the world. In 1996, Mulderbosch was one of the very first producers in the Cape to ferment Chenin Blanc in barriques. The resultant wine garnered an avid following and Mulderbosch has since become synonymous with the variety.

Vintage - 2019 was a challenging vintage: after three years of drought, the vines were starting to feel the strain and ultimately crops were lighter with smaller bunches. A lack of cold spells during winter resulted in insufficient dormancy and uneven budburst. Winds in October and humid weather contributed to poor berry set and pressure of downy mildew. However, meticulous work in the vineyards and cool, breezy conditions at harvest resulted in excellent fruit with good levels of natural acidity, ripe flavours at lower alcohol levels and wonderful flavour concentration.

Vineyard - The Chardonnay grapes come from the estate vineyard in Stellenbosch. The vineyards benefit from being 14 kilometres from False Bay, where the strong maritime influence cools the vineyards in the hot, summer months, ensuring good levels of natural grape acidity in the final wine, central to the Mulderbosch style of fresh, balanced wines. The soil is made up of decomposed sandstone with some granitic conglomerate stones, known as ‘Koffieklip’. This iron-ferrite rich soil produces wines with more minerality and intensity. The hand-harvested Chardonnay vines are trellised using a five wire cordon system. At Mulderbosch herbicides are no longer used; instead they use a mechanical under vine weeder to encourage microbial diversity in the rhizosphere (rootzone).

Winemaking - The grapes were whole bunch pressed to tank and left to settle overnight. Fermentation took place with natural yeasts; half the juice was fermented in oak of which 50% was new and 50% was neutral, the remaining half was fermented in stainless steel to retain the purity of fruit. The wine spent six months maturing on the fine lees in their respective fermentation vessels, before being deftly blended and placed in larger format oak foudres of 1,500 litres, where the blend spent a further six months. The wine was lightly filtered prior to bottling.

Tasting Note - The Mulderbosch Chardonnay is vivaciously zesty with tense minerality, this focussed Chardonnay delivers Granny Smith apple and a lemony zing. Enveloped in a touch of caramel through to a core of ripe stone fruit, the rich, creamy palate is beautifully balanced and long.
