The Aylward Pinot Noir 2012 from Oceans Eight Wines
The Aylward Pinot Noir from Oceans Eight Wines is a remarkable red wine, full of exotic fruit characteristics and immesnse depth of flavour. This is a serious Pinot Noir and one that commands the best food to accompany it. We recommend steak tartare or a succulent roasy chicken.
Owned by the Aylward family - founders of the renowned Kooyong winery - Ocean Eight was established in 2004 in the southern and cooler side of Mornington Peninsula. In their state-of-the-art, temperature controlled, gravity-fed winery winemaker Mike Aylward produces stunning cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir taking influence from the great old world wine regions of Alsace, Burgundy and Champagne. All the grapes for the Ocean Eight wines are sourced from the family’s 17 hectares of vineyards and their total production each year is just 5,000 cases only.
Tuerong boasts sandy loam soils, ideal for growing high quality Pinot Noir fruit. Theses soils are fertile with excellent drainage. The location of Tuerong is also perfect positioned to maximise the Maritime climate of the Mornington Peninsula. The offshore breezes provide excellent relief and also help reduce disease pressure. The grapes for this wine are grown in one acre of MV6 clone which provides consistently the best Pinot Noir fruit each year. There is a slightly higher ratio of limestone to clay soil and the vines are cropped back to one tonne per acre or 12 bunches per vine to develop further structure in the wine.
The fruit was hand-picked and hand-sorted. The grapes underwent a long cool fermentation followed by five weeks on the skins. It was pressed into a one year old 500 litre François Frères puncheon. It was then left in barrel for a period of 16 months to mature. Sulphur was added just before bottling, however there was no added acidity.
Pronounced sweet ripe raspberry aromas with hints of that desirable trait for really good Pinot Noir, a damp forest floor character. Whilst the nose is attractive the wine almost explodes with flavour on the palate. It is simply bursting with raspberry, cherry and plums as well as some smoky oak and a slinky smooth velvety texture. This is something really special.
A fantastic wine to pair with roast chicken and steak tartare
