Poderi Parpinello Monica di Sardegna Superiore 2015

The Monica di Sardegna from Poderi Parpinello is a medium bodied red wine showing spice and savoury cherry and prune flavours through to a lively and peppery finish.

Producer Note - The Parpinello family have run this 30 hectare estate and winery with dedication and passion for three generations. Giampaolo Parpinello and his son Paolo strive to reflect the Sardinian terroir and reveal the typicity of the wines. The vineyard is situated on a gentle slope between Alghero and Sassari in the north west of the island. In order to reflect this typicity, modern winemaking technology is successfully combined with traditional farming methods, resulting in high quality wines with intense aromas and flavours, evocative of the terroir from which they originate.

Vintage - The water reserves accumulated during the winter facilitated good vine growth during the summer period. The summer was hot, but the temperatures fell during the second half of August enabling a slow maturation of the grapes. The berries had accumulated excellent aromatic and polyphenolic substances when they were harvested. The harvest took place in the middle of September and the resulting wines show excellent structure and aromatics.

Vineyard - At the turn of the 11th century a few Spanish monks planted the Monica grape variety in the area between Sassari and Alghero. Under the reign of the Aragonese, it was the Camaldolesi who promoted the wine all over the rest of the island with such a degree of success, that today it is amongst the most popular red grape varieties in Sardinia. The vineyard soils are made up of calcareous marne, conglomerate and sandstone. The vines are pruned and harvested manually, with the careful selection of grape clusters during the harvest.

Winemaking - Traditional vinification took place with a 10 to 12 day maceration period to extract maximum aromas, colour, flavours and fine tannins. The wine was made in an unoaked style to retain the purity of fruit from the Monica variety.

Tasting Note - Deep red in colour, with notes of wild flowers, mature red fruits and a hint of spice through to a smooth and elegant palate.

Serving Suggestion - Delicious with canapés and cheeses. Excellent with salami; it also complements the typically rich flavours of Sardinian meat dishes to perfection.
