Ravenswood Lane Chardonnay 2014.
The Ravensowod Lane Chardonnay is a superb example of cool climate Australian white wine. Subtle oak textures and delightful honey characters are present throughout the wine although the oak is barely noticable as it is kept in second or thirs use casks which barely imparts any vanilla or toast.
Made at John Edwards’ state-of-the-art small batch winery The Lane Vineyard in Adelaide Hills, this trio of wines are produced exclusively for us under the Ravenswood Lane name. Small parcels of fruit are hand selected to produce wines with impeccable provenance; each wine is a delicious combination of site, personality and experience that brings the vibrancy of the vineyard into every glass. Vineyard manager Marty Edwards follows a philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for organic principles, and is committed to capturing the nuances of each site and variety. He’s achieved this and more in these inspirational wines.
A lovely vintage in the Adelaide Hills. Ample rain throughout winter with an early bud burst and no spring rain, which led to early fruit flowering. November and December 2013 were unseasonably cold naturally reducing the yields. Veraison in January 2014 led to a long, dry ripening period through to harvest in March. No dramatic heat spikes or major rainfall encouraged even ripening. The fruit was picked in the middle of March.
The 1.8ha of Chardonnay was planted in 1998 in a very cold pocket by the tractor shed at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level. The vines are single cordon, spur pruned VSP and planted on their own roots in Ravenswood Lane’s hallmark ancient lithosols (ancient broken down limestone) top soil over red podzolic clays. The vineyards are managed sustainably with great care taken to protect and preserve the unique micro climate and environment in which they are grown. No systemic chemicals are used and strict lutte raisonnée philosophies are followed.
The Chardonnay was hand-selected and gently crushed prior to pressing in a pneumatic bag press. The wine was cold settled prior to natural fermentation. This took place in a combination of stainless steel (80%) and there mainder in second or third use French oak barriques (only one barrel was new) for four months, before blending back into stainless steel on gross lees for another six months. The wine saw a gentle filtration before bottling.
From one of the cooler spots high in the Adelaide Hills, the orchard fruit notes are flecked with honey and hints of toasted hazlenuts though little oak is to be seen.
A lovely match with sheeps cheeses or scallops and bacon
