Made at John Edwards’ state-of-the-art small batch winery The Lane Vineyard in Adelaide Hills, this trio of wines are produced exclusively for us under the Ravenswood Lane name. Small parcels of fruit are hand selected to produce wines with impeccable provenance; each wine is a delicious combination of site, personality and experience that brings the vibrancy of the vineyard into every glass. Vineyard manager Marty Edwards follows a philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for organic principles, and is committed to capturing the nuances of each site and variety. He’s achieved this and more in these inspirational wines.
A lovely vintage, ample rain throughout winter with an early bud burst and no spring rain, which led to early fruit flowering. November and December 2013 were unseasonably cold naturally reducing the yields. Veraisonin Jan 2014 led to a long, dry ripening period through to harvest in March. No dramatic heat spikes or major rainfall encouraged even ripening.
The Semillon was planted in 1998, single cordon, VSP spur pruned at 440m in a south facing vineyard just outside Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. The Sauvignon Blanc vines were also planted in 1998 at 450m on avery steep south-facing slope, single cordon VSP, with cane pruning. The soil is ancient lithosols (ancientbroken down limestone) top soil over a red podzolic clays. The vineyards are managed sustainably with great care taken to protect and preserve the unique micro climate and environment in which they are grown. No systemic chemicals are used and strict lutte raisonnée philosophies are followed.
The Semillon and Sauvignon were both hand selected in the vineyards and subsequently, whole bunch pressed in a pneumatic press on a long slow gentle cycle straight into a variety of stainless steel and seasoned Frenchoak 500 litre puncheons (no new oak is used). The parcels were fermented separately using indigenous yeasts, with no stirring. The wine spent three months in barrel and tank and once blended the wine was run into a largetank to rest on its lees for a further four months. The wine was then cold settled, racked, gently filtered and bottled.
Bright lemon balm fruit notes underpin the racy lime juice Sauvignon, making this an exquistely balanced wine.
