Saint Clair Bull Block 5 Pinot Noir 2013 6 Bottle Case

The power and intensity of the berries in this wine are a result of the silt loam soil and clay loam subsoil, and the warm days and cool nights. Once grazed by bulls the site of the vines is now given over fully to growing the fruits. To further increase the flavour intensity this vineyard is deliberately harvested late in the season to extend the ripening. It’s fruit flavours include wild blackberries, black cherries, and blackcurrant, which are reflected in the dark garnet of this pinot noir. With a slight spiced note to the finish this wine works particularly well with full flavoured lamb.

Winery Information
The Saint Clair Family Estate was first settled by the Sinclair family. One of the estate's pioneers, James Sinclair, is closely associated with the founding of the town of Blenheim. Neal and Judy Ibbotson have owned the estate since 1978, transforming it from a vineyard to a full wine making facility and joining the ranks of Marlborough winemakers to produce fine New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and other premium wines. The very first vintage from Saint Clair Wines won awards upon its release in 1994. Saint Clair's sustainable approach to winemaking involves open canopy with good light and airflow, minimal use of sprays to control pests, and care given to individual vines to encourage good production. For instance, the vineyard employs leaf plucking and thinning of fruits and shoots. They also encourage selection without cultivation as another of their sustainable practises. They have been using a grading system since 2001 as a management tool and for assessing the quality of each vineyard's wine batches.

Vinification
The fruit was held cold for four days prior to ferment to help extract maximum flavour and enhance colour. Selected yeasts were used to carry out fermentation and the juice is hand plunged up to 6 times daily. At dryness each batch was pressed to tank and then racked off gross lees to stainless steel tanks. 31% of the juice underwent malolactic fermentation in new french oak. It is then blended and carefully prepared for bottling.

Viticulture
The grapes are sourced from the single vineyard "Bull Block" in the Omaka valley. This vineyard is named after the stud jersey bulls who previously grazed here. The grapes are traditionally harvested later in the season allowing a longer ripening period which increases the intensity of flavours.

Tasting Note
With aromas of black cherries, plums and toasty oak the palate is rich and full with powerful darkfruit flavours, deep savoury notes and a lingering finish

Everyday Serving Suggestion
Saint Clair Bull Block 5 Pinot Noir matches perfectly with full-flavoured lamb or beef
