Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015
The Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc has to be my wifes all time favourite wine. Everytime I am in trouble I produce a bottle of this Kiwi nectar and all is forgiven. This delicious white wine is an amazing concoction of the most sublime fruit characters that New Zealand Sauvignon can produce. You will be teased by lychees, tantalised by passion fruit, seduced by grapefruit and a myriad of other nuances. This isn't one of the fruit bombs that overpower the palate, this is a wine you will want to drink again and again and savour.
Each year the winemaking team at Saint Clair, lead by Matt Thomson get together and have their tasting of all the different blocks fruit. Only the very finest fruit makes it into the Wairau Reserve and sometimes the wine can be a blend from different growing blocks. This extreme attention to detail makes this Sauvignon Blanc one of the most awarded wines in the New Zealand wine world.
The pale straw colour of this Sauvignon Blanc could easily be mistaken for gold when you taste it’s richness of flavour. Despite the light colour the flavours are a heady mix of blackcurrent and passionfruit, and the ocean view this vineyard experiences gives the wine a salty minerality. Cool nights give way to warm days and this vine matures well as a result. Hungry for nutrients the vines are nourished in rich soils once fed by flood waters. With it’s proximity to the ocean this wine is best served with oysters or pan fried white fish.
The Saint Clair Family Estate was first settled by the Sinclair family. One of the estate's pioneers, James Sinclair, is closely associated with the founding of the town of Blenheim. Neal and Judy Ibbotson have owned the estate since 1978, transforming it from a vineyard to a full wine making facility and joining the ranks of Marlborough winemakers to produce fine New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and other premium wines. The very first vintage from Saint Clair Wines won awards upon its release in 1994.
Saint Clair's sustainable approach to winemaking involves open canopy with good light and airflow, minimal use of sprays to control pests, and care given to individual vines to encourage good production. For instance, the vineyard employs leaf plucking and thinning of fruits and shoots. They also encourage selection without cultivation as another of their sustainable practises. They have been using a grading system since 2001 as a management tool and for assessing the quality of each vineyard's wine batches.
Wairau Reserve Sauvignon continues to lead the way when it comes to awards for best Sauvignon Blanc.
The grapes are sourced from different vineyards in every vintage. The winemaking team have an annual meeting to assess and decide which fruit is the best and it is only the finest that makes it's way into the Wairau Reserve. In some vintages this is from a single block and in others it is a blend of different fruit from mixed blocks. This ensures that only the finest possible wine is used for this iconic Sauvignon Blanc
Fertile, deep silt soils.
The fruit was pressed off as quickly as possible to minimise skin contact and juice deterioration following harvesting. After settling the juice was fermented using selected yeast in 100 per cent stainless steel at cool temperatures to retain fruit flavour and freshness. This batch was selected as the Wairau Reserve wine due to its power and intensity of flavour.
The Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc is full and rich with firm, well-balanced acidity. This wine has powerful passion fruit, blackcurrant and grapefruit. A mineral component adds complexity and depth to a long lingering finish.
