San Marzano Collezione 50 Cinquantra Vino d'Italia 2012

In 1962, 19 vine growers from San Marzano, whose families had farmed the land for generations, combined their efforts to establish 'Cantine SanMarzano'. Through the decades this coooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1200 vine growers, using modern and technologically advanced plants and producing elegant wines without forgetting the obligation to the very old Apulian wine tradition. Nowadays the melding of time honoured tradition, passion and sensibility with contemporary techniques enables this winery to produce wines with distinctive varietals and regional characters, marvellously reflecting individual attention, seasonal variation and local terroir.

Tasting NotesRuby red colour with purple reflections, intense and complex bouquet with fruity notes of prune, red jam, the spicy scent of vanilla and liquorice. Intense on the palate, full bodied and soft with a long finish.

Vineyard note - The vineyards are located at SanMarzano, Salento, Puglia. The vines are grown at an altitude of around100 metres above sea level. Here the temperatures are medium to high in the summer, with good evapotranspiration.

Soil - The soil is clayey and not very deep, with a good presence of rocks.

Viticulture - The vines are over 50 year old bush vines, with 4/6buds per plant and an average production of 1kg of grapes each. The hand harvest of lightly over ripe grapes took place in September.

Vinification - The grapes were destemmed and crushed and then went through a pre-fermentation cold maceration. Alcoholic fermentation with autochthonous yeasts. Final drawing off with soft pressing machines. The malolactic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, the wine was agedfor 12 months in fine French wood barrels.

Grapes - Negroamaro 50%, Primitivo 50%

Awards - International Wine & Spirit Challenge, Silver Outstanding - 2015 International Wine Challenge, Commended, 2015
