San Marzano Primitivo Di Manduria Talo 2019

San Marzano has to be one of my all time favourite wineries. The Primitivo Talo is one of the best examples of Primitivo I have drunk and this delicious red wine offers magnificent value for money. The tannins are velvety soft and the fruit complexity is just delicious. I have served this red wine to many non red drinkers and they have become captivated by it's charms and converted.

In the heart of d.o.p. Primitivo di Manduria and Mediterranean terroir, Cantine San Marzano has settled in Apulia, Italy. The cantine was established in 1962 by 19 vine growers whose families had farmed the area for generations. It has evolved with the years while maintaining its loyalty to traditional Apulian winemaking. Now the co-operative consists of over 1000 wine growers of the Puglia region. San Marzano wines are elegant and offer a wide variation of appeal, from red to white to rosé, sparkling and not. Prior to 2013, they were known as Lucarelli, but they have since re branded and become a world-renowned name in winemaking with many awards. They have won wine awards in China and Japan as well as in Italy, both nationally and internationally.

San Marzano, Salento, Puglia. The area is about 100 meters above sea level, with high average temperatures and medium-low rainfall. The soft soil layer is clayey and quite thin, with a good presence of rocks. San Marzano is a cooperative of over 1000 small growers in Puglia. They combine their fruit each year to produce some of the most amazing wines from this region

Harvest period:

Second week of September.

Vinification:

Thermo-controlled maceration for about 10 days, followed by the alcoholic fermentation with selected yeasts.

Ageing:

In French and American wood barrels for 6 months.

Tasting notes:

Ruby red colour enriched with violet reflections; generous bouquet, which recalls ripe cherries and plums, with pleasant notes of cocoa and vanilla. This wine has a velvety texture, softened by the warmth of the Primitivo grapes; the finish offers notes of persistent sweetness.

Best served with:

A versatile red, which accompanies savoury first courses, lamb and game dishes served with rich sauces or hard cheeses

Serving temperature:

About 16-18°C.

I tried this as an add-on to an order of the '62 and have to say that it is an outstanding wine for the price. The Primitivo grape was news to me, but well used as it is here, it delivers a remarkable intensity of fruit, deep colour and sophistication. San Marzano are moving out of the shadow of supplying big winemakers and will soon build an independent reputation for quality. In the meantime it's a case of premium gear at modest prices for the wine punter.

That said I am now off to endorse the '62 Annniversario which achieves the unlikely feat of justifying double the price. A tough gig but one that it more than delivers on. Save yourself decision making, be like me, buy both.
Thank you so much for this superb review Raghnall. San Marzano continue to amaze me with the quality of the wines they produce
