Swartland Winery Idealia 2013 and 2014 available at this clearance price

This is something of the crown jewel in the Swartland Winery portfolio, a blend of native old vine Pinotage with a dash of inky Shiraz and the structure of the Bordelais varietals. This typifies the Swartland climate at its best – intense fruit and concentration from sun and water stress, yet with enough acidity and grip to keep it all fresh. On the nose are subtle bottle-aged notes of forest floor and violets, leading onto a palate dominated by lively black berry fruit and cinnamon spice, and a touch of vanilla-inflected oak. It’s long, powerful and lingering, and despite its age has plenty of life left in it yet. This is serious stuff from Swartland Winery, and available from us at an excellent price.

Following fermentation and an extended skin contact, the wine was aged in a combination of new and second and third fill French oak barrels for a period of 12 months. No animal-based fining agents or winery aids were used during the vinification.

The Swartland region of South Africa is at the forefront of the new wave Cape wine movement. Swartland Winery attempts to showcase the very best of this rugged, unforgiving terroir, crafting an expressive range of wines that typify the zeitgeist of the modern South African wine scene with the aid of vegan-friendly winemaking techniques.

Winery Information

Swartland Winery was established in 1948 near Cape Town, South Africa as a cooperative cellar. It now operates as a full-fledged wine company with its own production and bottling facilities. Wheat and grapes grow by the hectare throughout the region, with Swartland Winery producing from 3,600 hectares of vines from a 22km radius of surrounding farmland. The winery produces about 2 million 9 litre cases of wine a year, and its wines have been winning many awards in the past few years as their international acclaim rises. This region, with its hot, dry weather and bright blue skies, has proven to be an amazing place for growing bush wines. Since the 1990s, more red grape varieties have been planted than ever before, so South African red wine has become a more popular option on the market. Swartland red wine is exemplified in their Winemakers Collection, though they also produce a range of white, sparkling, and fortified wines.

Vineyard Note

For this vineyard, environmental sustainability is just as important as balance of flavors. They select a variety of different wine grapes, raised with as little intervention as possible and amongst cover crops for nutrition, moisture, and protection, to create an expertly blended flavor. Averaging a yield of six tonnes of fruit per hectare, the grapes grown in these vineyards are unsurpassed in quality and reflect the vivacity of their environment.

Tasting Notes

An intense brick red colour gives way to a complex and forthcoming nose with earthy aromas of forest floor, lively black berry fruit and sweet scented violets. This is a complex wine with sweet scented floral aromas, spices and vanilla backed by lively berry fruit. Full, rich and voluptuous, with firm yet refined tannins, beautiful oak integration and an excellent balance between fruit, tannin and wood. Lingering finish.

Serving Suggestion

Enjoy with authentic Italian pasta, red meat dishes with rich sauces or roasted lamb.
