Teusner Avatar Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2013.
The Avatar Grenache Mataro Shiraz from Teusner Wines is a delicious full bodied red wine that pairs wonderfully with cottage pie and mature cheddar. The skilfull blend of these three Barossa grape varieties ensures the resulting red wine is savoury, spicey and supple.
Set up by Kym Teusner and Michael Page in 2001, Teusner’s philosophy is to produce only exceptional, affordable wines by being very selective about the fruit that is sourced from old, well maintained vineyards. These vineyards reliably produce balanced, complex fruit which are guided, with minimal inputs, into wine. “Teusner was started by doing what we love, we never mapped it out to be so big. We started small and rode the wave and this is where we’ve ended. These are wines that we love to drink” explains Winemaker Kym Teusner.
Sourced from the perimeter of the Barossa, where it elevates. A key difference here is the age of the vines, which are between 65 to 130 years old and are mostly in bush vine format. Sourced from several subregions, Ebeneezer has the oldest vines - the exact age of the vines is not 100% certain, suffice to say that three generations have seen them grow!
All the parcels were fermented separately. The main difference during the vinification process was the temperature of ferments. Mataro and Grenache were allowed to get a bit hotter during fermentation, to reduce the risk of confected notes. This also helped to preserve the savoury characteristics of the Grenache. 30% of the Shiraz saw new oak for a period of 12 months, which accounts for 10% of the entire blend. The parcels were blended just before bottling.
Avatar Grenache Mataro Shiraz is one of Kym Teusner's most famous blends. Briary, earthy flavours from the Grenache are integrated seamlessly with the autumn fruit notes from the Shiraz and Mataro. Finely grained tannins carry the flavours along perfectly into a long and rewarding finish.
