The Paringa Pinot Noir 2012 from Paringa Estate.

The Paringa Pinot Noir from the wonderful Paringa Estate is a spectacular example of this difficult grape variety. This is a rich red wine with oodles of flavours which combine beautifully.

Founded in 1984 by Lindsay McCall when he purchased a derelict orchard, Paringa Estate started small with a three tonne harvest in 1988 but has grown considerably in the intervening years. Production is now at 200 tonnes and Paringa Estate is one of the most highly awarded wineries in Australia, regularly winning gold trophies for its Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. “One of the best, if not the best, wineries on the Peninsula” says James Halliday.

Vineyard

This vineyard is known as "the home block" as it sits next to the cellar door and dates back to 1985. It is northfacing with at an altitude of 146 metres above sea level. The soil is the typical red volcanic soil, known as Ferrasol.

Winemaking

The hand-picked fruit was 100% destemmed and cold soaked for four days before yeast inoculation. The wine spent a total of 14 days on skins in open fermenters with gentle plunging. Post fermentation the wine was then aged for ten months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Note

The wine has rich powerful aromas of spice and dark cherry, combined with charry oak, secondary barrel ferment mocha/coffee characters that will integrate further to become more Burgundian like with bottle age. On the palate the wine has rich ripe fruit, firm fine grained tannins helping provide excellent texture and length.
