Barbera

A selection of wines made from the Barbera grape variety.

Michele Chiarlo makes excellent examples of Barbera and is our principle producer of this grape.

Barbera is generally grown in the Piemont region of Italy and it is one of Italy's most grown grape varieties. It is so well grown because it gives wines that are low in tannins but high in acidity and colour and it also produces high yields which is important for the growers of this varietal.

Barbera is a wine that can take on many personalities depending on the winemaker. You can get light versions of Barbera which have raspberry and multiple black berry flavours. The fuller flavoured Barbera wines take on a different taste. These wines are often aged in oak as this grape really reponds to oak ageing and the different styles of oak.

The lighter versions are made for early drinking whereas the heavier wines will benefgit from a little time in bottle to show their true expression. Michele Chiarlo has mastered Barbera wines and his Le Orme Barbera d'Asti is regarded as one of the best examples of this wine.
