Italian Red Grape wines

A selection of wines made from a variety of Italian grape varieties.

Italy is home to thousand of different grape varietals, some of which can be the same but have different names from village to village. Each tiny village or town will often display stiff passion for their preferred named grape and insist that it is much better then their neighbours. It is a very similar thing with the cuisine where shapes of pasta and styles of food have been argued about vigorously for centuries!

One thing is for certain, Italy is still a powerhouse when it comes to wine production. They are still the largest producer of wine in the world although they are not the largest exporter as many of the grapes are kept for local consumption. To give you some idea of the size of Italy's wine production just look at Sicily which produces more litres of wine than Australia!

Some of the more notable grapes that are world renowned include Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Primitivo, Negroamaro, Montepulciano and Valpollicella.
