The Languedoc is an area that is rich in tradition but was not recognised as being a high quality growing area in the 1855 classification of French wine regions. This means that the wines do not attract the same hype as the wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy and consequently are much lower in price. This is a vast growing area in France and it is one that takes advantage of the lesser classifictaion by experimenting wine different grape varieties but the most success comes from the grapes that are suited to it's unique soil, climate and overall terroir.

Leading wine producers like Gerard Bertrand have bucked the trend and produce world class wines from single grape varieties and the also produce remarkable blends.
