Nebbiolo

A selection of wines made with the Nebbiolo grape variety.

This is the grape used to make the famous Barolo regarded as one of the finest examples of Italian wine.

Nebbiolo is often described by the people of Piedmont as the King of Italian grapes. It is used in many different wines but Barolo is regarded as the finest example of this grape. Many people think this is a wine that is full bodied but in recent years the winemakers have changed their approach to making these wines. In the past Nebbiolo had to be aged for a significant time in bottle and/or cask as this grape normally needs to be aged to balance the tannins with the other characteristics of this grape.

There are two versions of Nebbiolo fermentation, the 'traditionalist' and the 'modern'.  Both will give superb versions of this wine but the traditionalist involves ageing the wine for many years to reduce the high levels of tannins in the wine. This is where Barolo has got the unneccessary badge of being a full bodied wine.
