Nero d'Avola

A selection of wines made from the Nero d'Avola grape variety.

This is mostly found in Sicily where it thrives in the heat and produces wines of deep colour, medium sweet tannins and medium body. This grape is occasionally blended with other new world varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon but the Sicilian's are keen to maintain it's presence as a single varietal wine. The Nero d'Avola grape is not really found anywhere else in Italy and it is one of those indigenous grape varieties that has seen international as well a local success.

Nero d'Avola is Sicily's most important grape variety and it is named after the small town of Avola in the south of Sicily. It has been described as being similar in style to new world Shiraz because it has a gentle peoppery characteristic with lovely, juicy plumy flavours. This is the perfect match to tomato based dishes as the acidity works well together.
