Shiraz & Syrah

A selection of wines made with the Shiraz or Syrah grape variety

Shiraz is known as Syrah in many countries in the world until the Australian wine makers got hold of this grape and began to make their own version and gave it it's Aussie name of Shiraz. The wine is spicy in flavour with peppery notes and intense blackcurrant fruit. It blends well with the white grape Viognier which can add a delicate elegance to this blockbuster of a wine. This is a grape that can achieve high levels of alcohol and fruit but getting good balance between these is a difficult task. The best winmakers acieve the perfect balance between high alcohol and high fruit complexities and there is no nasty alcohol burn in the mouth.

The best known areas for producing Syrah or Shiraz are Australia, Chile, Argentina and France, specifically the Northern Rhone area. Shiraz is also used to make dessert wine and even sparkling wine.
